Week of November 2, 2009
Dear Parents,
We had a special Spiritual Emphasis chapel on Wednesday and listened to Pastor Brett talk about the special gift of Jesus Christ. On Thursday, Rob Biagi performed many of his fantastic worship songs as we jumped and sang praises to God! We ended the week with our Harvest party and talked about God’s abundance and blessings in our lives. Please ask your child about these events. I’m sure they have precious things to tell you.
A big thank you goes to the families who brought in goodies for our Harvest party. We appreciate all the treats from Savannah Alday, Tricia Arbiola, Alex Borsada, Dylan Chin, Anastasia Cudhea, Jennifer Benavides, Matthew Elera, Caleb Lee, Shan Shan Lu, Aubree MacDonald, Samantha Miller, Zachary Morris, Kalan Namkoong, Brian Nguyen, Stephen Nguyen, Chloe Price, Olivia Quintana, Joshua Rosas, Alyssa Recor, Haley Robinson, Micheal Sarno, Ryan Standiford, and Anneliese Zeidan.
Our state posters are coming along nicely. We’d like to thank the moms of Aubree MacDonald and Mariam Youssef for helping us this week. Our next project day will be Wednesday, Nov. 18th from 2:00pm to 3:15pm. Please sign up for PIP hours if you’d like to assist us.
Congratulations to Zachary Morris and Brian Nguyen for passing all of their one minute multiplication tests! Shan Shan Lu and Mariam Youssef passed the 5 minute test of 100 multiplication facts! Stephen Nguyen passed the test in 4 minutes! Congratulations!
Have a fun weekend! God bless.

Dear Parents,
Our students did a great job working on the IOWA tests! This is the first year that students learn to use a scantron instead of writing in a test booklet. Parents will receive a copy of the results later in the school year. During Red Ribbon Week Retro Bill gave a terrific presentation on doing what is right and good and avoiding dangerous behavior. Please ask your child what he or she learned from Retro Bill’s talk. On Thursday, Alyssa Recor brought in homemade lollipops shaped like red ribbons. They were delicious! On Friday, Caleb Lee brought in cookies and we had a free game period as a reward for filling up the class marble jar! Yea!
We continued to research and work on our state poster projects this week. A big thank you goes to Ryan’s grandfather, Mr. Weiler, and Anastasia’s father, Mr. Cudhea, for helping us.
Congratulations to Alex Borsada, Shan Shan Lu, Stephen Nguyen, and Mariam Youssef, for passing all of their one minute multiplication tests. Also, Stephen is the first student in our class to pass the 5 minute test of 100 multiplication facts. Outstanding! Students, keep practicing your multiplication tables at home.
Have a wonderful weekend! God bless.

3rd Grade Mission Project - Making Fleece Comfort Blankets
Dear Parents,
For our third grade mission project we will prepare comfort blankets and cards for families in need. We partner with the Salvation Army of Orange County who will distribute the blankets and cards to families at Christmas time.
To cover the cost of supplies we are asking that each student donate $5.00 towards this mission project. We encourage students to find ways to earn the money to help them take ownership of their mission project. Students are to bring in their donations by Monday, November 16th.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Vandercook

Timeline (Time Line) Project
In Social Studies, we are learning to read timelines. Now, students will make a timeline of their own. This project is to be completed at home. Each student will create a timeline with pictures of important events and dates in his or her life. I plan to laminate the timelines. If you do not want your child’s timeline to be laminated, let me know.
Please look at the sample provided to see one possible way to make the timeline. You may be as creative and original as you want.
In class we have discussed how each student has different important events in his or her life. Some examples we shared were:
day you were born
spiritual birthday (the day you accepted Christ into your heart)
first communion
baptism
special sports events
new pets
family reunions
new siblings
first day of school
family vacation
birthdays
holidays, etc.
If your child does not have pictures of important dates, he or she may draw pictures or use magazine pictures on the timeline. Paper for the timeline will be sent home next week.
Guidelines: 1. Start with the date of your birth.
2. Events need to be in chronological order.
3. Date and label each event.
4. Printing or handwriting is acceptable.
Due date: By Monday, January 11th, 2010 (or earlier)
