Dear Parents and Students,
Red Ribbon week started off with a great assembly by Retro Bill. We all loved him and his positive high energy message. He modeled how to positively handle peer pressure, bullying with words or actions, listening to your parents and teachers, and making the decision to stay positive. It was fun dressing up for 50’s day. The children all looked so cute.
“Big Day”…We collected just under 1000 recyclable cans and bottles from our class. We didn’t win the competition but it was fun trying. Big Day was a success. We cheered on our lady Tigers at their middle school basketball game against Independence. We won after an exciting game and they continue their undefeated history. Thank you for showing your school spirit by attending. Caleb won a prize at the drawing during halftime.
Thank you for donating cans of food which will benefit the Orange County Rescue Mission. The National Honor Society sponsored the food drive as a service to our community. Our class brought in about 65 cans. Thank you for helping feed the needy.
I would like to remind you to encourage your child to earn coins to fill up their piggy bank. Please give them chores or little jobs around the house to EARN the money. I would like to collect the $$ in November before Thanksgiving. This money is for our class mission project to support a World Vision child named Alexis. He lives in a poor town in Mexico. He has been sponsored by 4th grade for years at CCA. Please help your child take part in our mission service project. The word of the Lord says, 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? 40 The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 26 37-40.
Next week is Spiritual Emphasis Week. We will be having a special chapel on Wednesday, October 28th in the Freed Theater at 8:45a.m. (NO School Family on Friday). We will have our very own youth Pastor Brett come and talk to us and also learn about project Christmas Child with the shoe boxes. Parents are invited to attend. There will be special prayer time after chapel for those parents who need prayer for any reason and would like to stay. If you cannot make it to this special chapel and would like us to submit a prayer request please send it in to me and I will give it to the people in charge of prayer that day…
This week began the flu and cold season in our classroom. We had sick children go home with mild fever, headache, and tummy aches. We do daily hand sanitizer before snack and lunch. I remind them to wash hands frequently. There are a few items that we run short of throughout the year that help keep us from spreading germs…hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes to wipe off the tables, and boxes of tissue. Feel free to donate any of these items throughout the next few months. We are almost through a giant bottle of hand sanitizer (the second bottle this year). We appreciate all you do! Please remember that when your child runs a fever of any kind or vomits they must stay home. They must be fever free and vomit free for 24 hours before returning to school (24 hours after their fever/vomit is gone). Thank you for keeping us all healthy.
Please help your child choose a mission for their report. Please let me know which mission you choose. I can send home some general information about your mission once I know. We already have three people doing San Juan Capistrano so you may want to choose a different mission. Now is the time to gather information, take notes, and start a first copy of the rough draft. The rough draft should be done in your child’s best cursive handwriting and double spaced (skipping a line). They should write the first rough draft from their notes. Please use at least three different sources (book, encyclopedia, internet…). Be sure not to copy directly from any source. We have been learning about plagiarism in language. After the first draft is written, the next step is to “check and polish” the accuracy of all facts, dates, and names. Reread making sure it has complete sentences, makes sense, and that you have enough information… Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The children have a check-list in their language book that they can use during this writing process. After it has been edited, they write the final “rough draft” double spaced, which will be turned in. Thank you for assisting them in this process. Please note that this is not a one step writing project. They are learning that writing is a process with many steps. Help them learn to edit and rewrite before turning in their final “rough draft”.
Our wonderful PTT is sponsoring a concert by Rob Biaggi on Thursday, October 29th at 9a.m. in the gym. You are welcome to come rock out with us. He will have tee shirts and cd’s for sale. If you would like to make a purchase you or your child can do so at the concert so send in the money with your child that day.
Spider Day is here! Friday, October 30, 2009 we will be having Spider Day from 9:00a.m. - 12:00p.m. Please come to school dressed and adorned in Spiders! We will be doing spider centers including making a spider snack, crafts, games, and more. If you would like to earn PIP hours for this day please go online and sign up before you come. Dear Parents and Students,
I am so pleased with our performance at School Family. What an awesome way to praise, worship, and spread the love of Jesus! Our class did an EXCELLENT job with their songs, skit, pledges, readings, and prayers… All their hard work practicing paid off. I hope you enjoyed it! We have been getting many praises and compliments.
The field trip to San Juan Capistrano mission went very smoothly thanks to all the parents that came with us. I believe we had about 18+ chaperones. The train ride was so fun and relaxing. We even spotted Justin’s dad waving to us as we passed his work site. The mission experience was a great introduction to mission life and the Native American Indian culture which we are beginning to study in history this month through November. The students (and parents) enjoyed the hands-on rope making class. They really did like making their own rope. We will be decorating a bulletin board with the rope. Thanks again for letting your child participate and for all the parent chaperones.
I would like to get a head count of all the students / parents that are planning to go on the Sacramento field trip on March 4, 2010. This is by far the favorite field trip in the history of fourth grade. Students may attend with or without their parent. All students will be safe and watched over at all times. Please place your deposit with us and we will turn in all the deposits to Travel Teens at the end of this month. Once the deposit is in the tour group company “Travel Teens” is very flexible with their payment plan and can work with you if you need a little extra time. Please fill out the cut-off slip at the bottom and send it in to me ASAP whether or not you will be attending. Thank you! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Spider Day is fast approaching Friday, October 30, 2009. We will be wrapping up our literature unit on Charlotte’s Web with this special day. Start gathering all your “Spider” stuff to wear that day. Students should dress in black, grey, white, and may adorn themselves with spider items and decorations…like plastic spiders, webs, and anything related to spiders. Be as creative as you like it makes the day very special. We will need parent volunteers to help during the day with spider activities and clean-up (sign up for PIP hours online).
Red Ribbon Week is next week, October 19 – 23. Monday is “50’s Day”. Come to school dressed in your 50’s best…pony tail, poodle skirt, jeans rolled up and white tee shirt, pompadours, greased back hair… If you don’t dress 50’s you must wear your regular uniform. We will be having a special assembly on Monday with Retro Bill to kick off our Red week.
“Big Day” is next Thursday, October 22nd. We will be collecting aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and coins in a friendly competition to help raise money for Yesenia. If our class gets the most points we will earn an extra PE class. So bring in all your bottles and cans to class next Monday – Thursday and help our class win. Plan to attend the middle school girl’s basketball game in the gym at 3:30 next Thursday, October 22 to earn a treat and more class points. Come cheer our lady Tigers on to victory and show your school spirit. I will be there looking for you!
The National Honors Society is sponsoring a food drive for Orange County Rescue Mission next week. If a student brings in 5 or more cans of food they will receive a wrist band. Then on Thursday (the 22nd) they may wear jeans if they wear the wrist band with it. They must wear their school shirts however!!!!! Teachers may also participate!!!! I will be bringing in my 5+ cans!
Mission Report paperwork is being sent home in Friday Folders today! Please save these directions and start planning your mission project now. You may choose any mission you want to do for your report. The rough draft is due November 6th and the final copy is due December 4th. Dear Parents and Students,
We had another wonderful week in fourth grade. Wow, those California cookies looked and tasted great! We colored and labeled large maps of the four California regions along with some landmarks. Then, we decorated our giant cookies with frosting and Oreo crumbs for the dessert, chocolate chips for mountains, blue frosting and sprinkles for the Pacific Coast region, and green sour strips for the Central Valley. The students all went home with a California masterpiece! A huge THANK YOU to the moms of Dominic, Sebastian, Audrey, Natalie, and Madison R. for assisting the students in the classroom on this project. Thank you all for sending in the ingredients. We couldn’t have done it without you.
San Juan Capistrano Mission field trip on Monday, October 12th is coming quickly. On Monday, 10/5/09 I will send home a note with the details. We will be meeting at the Anaheim Amtrak station that morning.
Please take note that the Biography Book Report Posters are due Thursday, October 8th. We studied the details of a “biographical sketch” in writing this week. The students are prepared to do the writing portion at home if they haven’t done it yet. I will send them home with their notes. Please remember that the poster is the FINAL COPY and should be error free…spelling, grammar, punctuation should all be correct. Students may bring them in as soon as they are done. They will present them orally to the class throughout the week and I will be grading them at that time.
Progress Reports will be mailed out this week. Every student will receive one this first quarter. This year students are given letter grades. If your child is missing work and receiving a C or below in any subject it will be reflected in their grades and you will receive a print out listing all missing work or low test scores. Thank you for partnering with me in your child’s education
The Bible memory verse for this week is also the school verse for the 2009-2010 school year.
Proverbs 23:12.
“Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.”
Spider Day is scheduled for Friday, October 30, 2009. This will be the culmination of our literature unit on Charlotte’s Web. This is an especially fun day filled with all kinds of SPIDER activities. Please start planning a spider outfit to wear (not Halloween costume). Halloween is a great time to find all kinds of spider stuff. Examples of what to wear…black or white tee shirt with plastic spiders and webs attached all over it…a spider cape, spider hat, wear black jeans and a tee shirt and spread spider webs all over yourself…be creative and remember that you will wear it all day. I will need parent volunteers (sign up online for PIP hours) to help that day and to get the classroom ready after school one day that week. Let me know if you can help.
Please plan ahead to attend our 4th grade class School Family on Friday, October 16, 2009. The Christian character we will be sharing about is Knowledge. I hope you can come watch the children share their love for Jesus.
Books of the Bible Test 1 on Monday, October 5th. Students will write from memory the first 17 books from Genesis to Esther. Please practice the Books of the Bible at home…they should be able to sing them to you.
Many blessings,
Mrs. Hoops
