Dear Parents and Students,

Happy fall! We are having the usual hot weather just in time for autumn. We enjoyed a Bible story around our campfire this week and wrapped up the lesson by making smores. Ask your child to tell you about our little adventure featuring baby Moses.

I would like to recommend that the students start studying their spelling over the weekend. If they wrote their new spelling words one or two times at home they would have a head start for the week. I think this will help with their scores and confidence. Please remember to memorize the weekly memory verse. This counts as their Bible grade. They are tested every Thursday on their spelling test.

We will be decorating GIANT CA cookies in class this Monday, September 28th from 10:15 – 12:15. Please sign up online for PIP hours and join us in the classroom. We need parent volunteers to help our cookie day run smoothly. Don’t forget to send in your assigned ingredients. Thank You! DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR ALREADY BAKED Cookie to class on Monday morning ((on your cookie sheet)…

Please see the information on our Sacramento trip coming home today in Friday folders. Very Important!!!

Please encourage your child to learn by memory the names of the Books of the Bible at home. They will be tested on Monday, October 5th on the books from Genesis through Esther.

October Book Report information went home last week. The Biography Book Report for this month is to be done on a historical person (no longer living). The historical biography should be at least 90 pages. Please bring your book to be approved by me on Monday if you haven’t already done so. The book report POSTER is due by Thursday, October 8th (please note the date change from the 9th). You may request your poster when your child is almost done reading their book or I plan to send them home next Friday, October 2nd.

Please be sure to send in the permission slip for our first field trip to San Juan Capistrano Mission scheduled for Monday, October 12th. All the information went home on this past Monday. Please send in your $16.00 if you haven’t already done so. Parent chaperones are welcome but will need to purchase your own train ticket. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Please check online for PIP hours in our fourth grade class.

Progress reports will be mailed out on October 6, 2009. Every child will receive one this first quarter.

We have a new and exciting birthday policy that was approved this week. Every child will be allowed FREE DRESS on their birthday if they wish – using the guidelines in the handbook. If they have a Friday birthday they may do free dress even in School Family. If a birthday falls on the weekend or holidays do it the first day back. If the child forgets they will not be given another time. Summer birthdays and those who already had a birthday this school year will be given a day in May. Yeah!

God bless you,
Mrs. Hoops

Dear Parents and Students,

We had a great week with a lot of hard work and fun. We had a pop quiz in literature on Charlotte’s Web after reading chapter 5. We did a MYSTERY LESSON in science on Friday. Miss Schenk and I each did an experiment with each class. I made a volcano reviewing landforms and what makes a volcano from our history lessons this past week and Miss Schenk did an animal adaptations “bird beak” experiment from our science unit.

We also had a very special School Family this morning where each of our fourth graders was presented with a Bible of their own. We prayed for them to grow in Christ’s word as they read their new Bibles. They will take them home this weekend to show you but will need them in class to use during Bible class. They will bring them back home at the end of the year.

I hope to see you at Community Fest this Saturday outside by the church or at the CCA Rummage Sale.

Have a great weekend. Stay safe and healthy as we welcome in the season autumn next week.

God bless you,
Mrs. Hoops

Giant California Relief Cookies!
We are going to be making COOKIE maps of our state! We will be modeling the topography of California. In this project, the four geographical land regions of our state will be identified by using frosting, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and other tasty confections! This is a fun hands-on activity that the students will BEGIN at home. They will be required to form (out of cookie dough) the state of California and then locate each region and some of the major land features.

The maps will be completed in class on Monday, September 28th, when we will decorate and identify each region with the appropriate toppings. We are looking forward to decorating them in class that morning. Each student is to bring a tube of blue cake decorating gel by Friday, September 25th. In addition to the blue gel, the students have been assigned another ingredient / topping that they will share with a group on Monday. These are also due by Friday, September 25th.
Please send your child to school on Friday, 9/25 with:

The blank CA region maps are attached to the hard copy of this letter in
(Friday Folders) and will be sent home Friday, Sept. 18th. Students may use this map as a guide (cookie cutter) when forming and shaping their cookie and identifying the four land regions.

Thank you for your help!

ITEMS NEEDED at HOME:• 1 tube refrigerated SUGAR cookie dough – available at all grocery stores.
• 1 standard sized cookie sheet
• Cut-out region map to use as a guide (sent home Friday, Sept. 18th )

ITEMS to BRING to CLASS:
• BRING TO CLASS – by Friday, September 25th :
1. 1 tube of BLUE cake decorating gel
2. Your assigned decorating ingredient

BRING TO CLASS – MONDAY, 9/28:1.
***Your “baked at home” sugar cookie in the shape of California ready to be decorated in class.

*This is a fun project that you may guide your child in, but that should be done primarily by the student. Shaping and cookie instructions are attached.
If you have any questions, please stop by our classroom or send a note…

To Make a CA Relief Cookie Map
Directions
Purchase one tube of refrigerated SUGAR cookie dough. Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thickness. Use the Cut-Out Region Map as a guide to cut out your cookie. The cookie should be the size of your map. Lay the map on top of your rolled dough being careful not to press down too hard or paper will stick to the dough, trace, and then cut out around the edges to make the shape of California. Try to mold the dough to the different regions (ex. Mold/pinch dough for mountain regions…will usually bake out so don’t spend too much time on this).

*Cooking tip…roll out the dough and bake the cookie on parchment paper. This helps keep the dough from spreading when baked.

**Cookies may also be cut out into the shape of CA after it has been cooked and cooled.

Put cookie in the oven and bake until done. Follow directions on package. Cool completely.

***Don’t be alarmed if cookie cracks or breaks. We will have frosting glue to make any needed repairs.

Take the cookie to school on Monday, September 28th.

Students will take their cookies home after school on Friday to display their masterpiece, and then eat their states!

Thank you,
Mrs. Hoops and Miss Schenk
See Attached***

PIP HOURS…Can you volunteer?
We will need 5 parents, in each classroom, to help Monday, September 28th from 10:30a.m. – 12:30p.m. You may earn 2 PIP hours for your time. We will need help setting up, help with the cookie decorating, and clean up. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help. There will also be plenty of fun photo opts.

Please go online to the PIP site and sign up before the spots are filled. Thank you!

September 4, 2009

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 4th grade! We have had a wonderful new beginning. This week went smoothly although filled with some new and exciting firsts. We welcome two new students Audrey and Evan to our school and class. Fourth grade students get LOCKERS and believe me they are very excited about it. They had a few chances to practice their combination. Some were even able to open their lockers. They will practice and in time will be able to open them on their own. You are invited to practice with them if you have the chance after school. Remember right-left-right.

Thank you very much for buying and sending in your school supplies. We filled our pencil boxes with supplies and were ready to work on the first day of school. We jumped right into Bible, history, and science. Math is review for the first two weeks. Language unit 1 focuses on recognizing and writing good sentences. We are learning to write a Personal Narrative and will use your summer photos for this project. We have started our first literature book Charlotte’s Web. We made very cute pink piggy banks in honor of Wilber. The students will use their banks to save up coins for our class mission project. In fourth grade tradition, we will continue to sponsor our World Vision child Alexis from Mexico. We will talk more about this at Back to School night.

Back to School night is next Thursday, September 10th, first session 6:30-7:15pm or second session at 7:30-8:15pm. I look forward to meeting you and sharing all about fourth grade. Please see the note from the office with more details.

We will have our first spelling test on List 1 next week. I will send each child home with their spelling book on Friday so they may begin studying over the three day weekend. Attached to this Friday Letter will be a copy of the test for you to practice with. The test will be given on Friday next week due to the short week. Normally spelling tests are given on Thursdays.

PIZZA LUNCH through PTT (boosters) – Tuesday, September 8th, is the LAST chance to sign-up for pizza lunch. It starts next Friday, 9/11. Please return your check and order form to school on Tuesday in order to be included.
