Often students don’t realize that they may enjoy a particular genre until they begin reading it. I hope students will realize that a historical fiction book can be an excellent read! They will then create a paper quilt for this project. After students have completed their book, we will prepare the paper for the quilt in the classroom. Students will then take home the paper to fill it in with symbols and facts from the book. Students should bring their book with them to school daily so they could get a head start on reading it at school.

On Monday, we will also begin our “Puberty” lessons with a fabulous teacher, Mrs. Ferrell, who has graciously volunteered her time! Students who will not take part in these lessons will have some extra time to complete their daily class work.

ALVIN AILEY ~ By: Mia Sulentic (Class Historian)

On Thursday we went on a field trip. We saw the Alvin Ailey dance company perform. In New York there is an Alvin Ailey dance school where good dancers become great dancers. Alvin Ailey was a very successful man and so will these dancers because their performances were wonderful. They did Uptown ballet and Jazz. Although their style was different, it was interesting. My favorite performance was colors. The first color was brown, next color was white, and the last was yellow. The lighting and the scenes on the back drop were amazing. Another amazing thing was the strength of all of the dancers and the control they had. During the parts where there was no dance and they were getting ready for the next performance, one lady was talking and kept the crowd going. We had a great amount of fun. Therefore, it was an excellent and entertaining show.

Events of the Week ~ By: Courtney Starr Cabaday

This week we had a busy week! On Monday, we had a Cay quiz and we wrote our own sequel to The Cay. Tuesday was a non school day! Everyone had a blast on Tuesday. The next day we had a Math Test. Thursday we had tons of fun. We went on a field trip to Alvin Alley and it was very fun and entertaining. The theater was beautiful and the students loved the unique dancing. Thanks to Miss DeLeon we planned the field trip. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for coming and supporting your kids! They absolutely enjoy your presence in our classroom! I know it is hard to take off from work to be present, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! I thought the kids did a great job. They truly worked hard on their essays. They came up with great introductions with fabulous attention grabbing first sentences (extending from mechanical horses being installed in the white house to presidents being quoted about being sick and tired of politics). They came up with their own thesis, topic sentences, transition sentences, etc. They also were presidential and distinguished, while somehow managing to be hilarious, in their president costumes!

We are also beginning our final quarterly project. Students will chose historical fiction books to read this quarter. Students must choose their book by Monday (March 1st). The entire project is due on April 16th.

Busy ~ By: Kayla Cabaday
This week we experienced what it feels like to write and present a speech. Practice, time, and effort were put into making our speeches presentable. We hope you enjoyed it!

Besides “becoming” presidents, we also enjoyed gaining a new classmate and friend, Steve! Steve is a new student from Korea, who is smart and gets along with everyone! He is great at soccer and seems to be a great friend. He is very comfortable with the class already, and we all enjoy a new student joining our class!

New projects are in the works. We are going to make a paper quilt for our wall. We will be reading a historical fiction book at home this quarter, and we will create quilts based on our book. There are so many options, which will make this quilt fun!

Obviously, we had a busy week this week. We also finished our wonderful book, The Cay. It was a sad book, but a great relief filled our classroom as we read the last chapter. With the ending of one book, we must start another. Soon we will begin our new book, Bud, Not Buddy. Mrs. Papelian always has great ideas and great activities, and I trust that this will be a good book.

Another Field Trip! We are going to the Alvin Alley dance show. We will be watching amazing acrobatics and dance moves. Moreover, you can get extra credit in Music for going on this trip.

Our Field Trip (By: Justin Chang)

Last Thursday we went to the Discovery Science Center. It was really fun. We went on a place that shakes us like a real earthquake. There was a bed of nails and a tornado place. There was a place all about hockey too. We went through a tour of the solar system and learned a lot about the planets. The last thing we did was watch a 4-D movie about turtles. It was really cool! That was our wonderful day at the Discovery Science Center.

Our Wonderful kids really embraced the Read – A – Thon and read diligently all day on Monday! They really seemed to enjoy it! Please remember the Read-A-Thon Forms and money will be due this coming Tuesday (after Presidents’ Day), February 16th. We encourage students to feel empowered in raising money (every dollar counts) for Yesenia’s orphanage in Mexico!

The Discovery Science Center was educational and fun! February is the month for 5th graders at the Discovery Science Center. Thus, many activities were geared toward our curriculum. The new planetarium was great too, and the kids loved the 4D movie on turtles. Thank you to all our Chaperones who made everything run smoothly!.

I’m sorry I wasn’t there for the Valentine’s Party, but I am sure everyone had an awesome time during the Ice Cream Social and making crafts with Mrs. Willis. Unfortunately, I was under the weather and couldn’t join the festivities. ☹

READ-A-THON ~ By Mia Sulentic, Historian

This week was fun! On Monday we had a Read-A-Thon for a little girl named Yesenia in Mexico. We got to read for 215 minutes and bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows and stuffed animals. With tons of blankets some students made forts and read under them. Not only that, we got to wear free dress! It was a very comfortable and laid back day. But with all of that we had to remember what the cause was. I hope we raised a lot of money to help Yesenia and that God will bless her and all of the other children at her orphanage with all that they need. We are truly blessed (kind of spoiled) with the things we need and even the things we don't, so we should be extremely thankful.
We had to make a venue change due to weather conditions, but we took a “Godly” approach by taking it in stride and making some quick technical changes. The kids really rose to the occasion! They did a great job! They ALL deserved to win the “Godliness” award! Thank you, parents, for going out of your way. You found some amazing costumes for your own kids and their classmates! We are so thankful, especially me! This was the LAST School Family your kids will present, since they are soon off to middle school! We hope you all enjoyed it immensely!

This coming Monday, February 8th, is going to be a fun and meaningful day! We will be having our READ-A-THON mission project! Students will be reading all day to raise money for Yesenia! __________________________________________________________________ A Great Week – By: Kayla Cabaday (Class Historian)
Wow! This was a great week; I don't even know where to begin. I guess I can start with what a great success our School Family was! We all practiced really hard this week to teach you about Godliness. I would like to add a Bible verse that really explains Godliness, Psalms 1: 1-3.

1:1 Blessed is the man [1]
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law [2] of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

God is so amazing! He gives us unconditional love and is always there for us.

We would also like to thank a wonderful teacher, Mr. Mejia, who helped make this school family so special. Thank you Mr. Mejia, you are so awesome and we love you!

Thank you Mrs. Papelian for another great week! We are so blessed to have you for our teacher!

Our Week – By: Jack Willis
This week we did many different things. We started our President Reports on Monday. We practiced our School Family presentation all week. We read many exciting chapters in our novel, The Cay. We finished a few math lessons which taught us how to write decimal numbers, how to round them, and how to add, subtract, multiply and add decimal numbers.. We also learned that if we want we could go ahead in math. That was our week!

BACK 2 SCHOOL! By: Mia Sulentic (Class Historian)
This week went well. We were all so happy to see our friends again. It was hard getting back to the regular school schedule. Things like going to bed early, waking up early, and homework! But now, we're back in full swing of things.

On Monday, we had the best back to school day ever! All day we got to play games. We also got to wear free dress. The most popular game was the DS. There were also board games. The game that I brought was a dart board. My mom said, "I know you are 5th graders, but you are still young so be careful." Seriously!!! Like we're going to throw darts at each other. This day made coming back to school fun! Thanks Mrs. Papelian!

Weekly Report ~ By: Aubry Marriott
On Monday, our class got to wear free dress, because we earned points from using our vocabulary words. It was a really nice day to catch up and play games with our friends after the winter break. I know all of us will work really hard as a class to earn another free day. To get another fun day, we have to earn 200 points instead of 150 like last time. We are already working hard to reach our goal. Sharing our stories about our vacations was amazing. We are all thankful to our teacher, who gave us this opportunity to earn this special day.

During your two weeks off, 5th grade students have a few things to work on.

Before you return on January 4, 2009, you should:

	Explorer Project guidelines were passed out to students on Friday. Students must Research enough to work on any part of the Explorer project in class. Please use the Internet with help from a parent to see what you can come up with; You may also use the eLibrary website to look through the bookcart created for Explorers (see below) -be sure to read the articles about your explorer and print them if possible; look elsewhere on the Internet for more information; and even visit your local library to “explore” what they have too (if possible).

	Work on your book report – due Jan. 8. Students should continue working on their Quarterly Reading Project at home. This quarter students are required to read a Mystery. They will pretend to be a detective on a case for which they will create a case file. It’s a fun project which allows kids to be creative. Students got to see some examples of great work from years past. Please encourage your child to follow the rubrics.

	Have a fantastic and safe two weeks off!

	eLibrary website: http://www.proquestk12.com/
Username: 39-85278 Password: bigchalk

Go to the website and enter the info. above. Click “My Products Page” to log on. Click on the top box for eLibrary. Now click on the tab at the top for “bookcart” and then find the one labeled Explorers. Click on it and then you will see the list of choices. Find your explorers name (may be more than once!) and click on it for the link to a site of information.
1st Day Back
As you know, we have a Vocabulary Word Wall up in our classroom. Every time students catch me using one of these words, we put one tally mark on the board. Every time I catch them using a vocabulary word or if they find a vocabulary word in a book they are reading on their own, they get one tally mark. If they use one of these words in their writing, they get three tally marks. By using these words, students already earned 150 points, which means game time. Thus, on our first day back in the New Year, January 4th, we are going to have a fun day with free dress and games. Ask them what new words they have learned!! I hope you’re hearing these words at home on a daily basis! They’ve been doing a great job in class!

Students can bring any type of gift (silly or serious), wrapped nicely, under $10. It may be new or even a re-gift (something from home). Students will also be doing a small Christmas craft with Mrs. Willis after we play the White Elephant game. Parents are more than welcome to attend. Students: No one should know what you brought or which gift you brought.

I am so grateful for all my students and their parents!! I would especially like to send out hugs and bushels of thank you’s to all the parents who helped run the Glory Tables!!! We had the busiest night yet and it passed seamlessly. All of you were amazing! I was probably the luckiest teacher working the glory tables this year!! Furthermore, many big Thank You’s to all the parents who generously provided treats for our party and who volunteered their time!!!

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS IN THE AIR!
By: Mia Sulentic (Class Historian)

This week we've been preparing for the Christmas Program. The Christmas Program is so fun with all the dance, music, and songs. It's a great opportunity to show off our talents.

In music, which we had on Monday and Wednesday, we went to the Cathedral and rehearsed our song called "Cantad al Senior" which means sing to the Lord. As you can see we are going to sing this song in Spanish. It's a very joyful song!

Those of us in dance have been finishing and cleaning up our dance which is called "Love." There is a lot of African dance moves incorporated in it. Just like our song, this dance is very lively and joyful, and so much fun! I can't wait to show off our song and dance on Monday!!

We have also begun our Mythical Country Project inspired by Ella Enchanted, the last novel we completed. Students must use their creative juices to write a descriptive 5 paragraph essay about a mythical country. Students will also create a realistic looking map of their mythical country.
Our Adventurous Week ~ By: Kayla Cabaday (Class Historian)
Wow! This week was an adventure! Tanner got back from Russia with great results. He got tenth in the whole world. We are all proud of him and his accomplishments. We had a party for Tanner on Monday and he was so surprised. To celebrate Kiara and her mom created a banner that said, "Way To Go Tanner." They also brought cookies and brownies

We also celebrated two birthdays. On Monday we celebrated Victoria's 11th Birthday and on Tuesday we celebrated Claudia's 11th Birthday. As you can see this week was the beginning and end of the 5th grade "Sugar Rush."

On Tuesday to share the day with Claudia's Birthday we went to the Cathedral to see the Glory Of Christmas. The play was based of the story of Jesus' birth. This play incorporated music and dance. This play was directed by are very own drama teachers. The Glory Of Christmas is a wonderful lesson and glorious play. In this play the true meaning of Christmas is displayed in the Glory Of Christmas. The choir kids missed out on this "adventure."

The choir kids missed out but had there own exciting adventure. They went to the Operation Christmas Child Warehouse. But Rebekah will tell you more about her experience.

To ad more to the package we are working on two projects, The Bible Headline Project and the Mythical Country Project. They are very exciting projects and they let us use are imagination. Mrs. Papelian gives us unique projects to get our grasp on. She has such wonderful ideas and distributes them to us.

Now without further due This is Rebekah Thomas' wonderful paragraph!

Operation Christmas Child ~ By: Rebekah Thomas
The Crystal Cathedral Academy Choir got to go to the Operation Christmas Child Warehouse. We performed for the people there. We sang two songs called "We Need A Little Christmas" and "Operation Christmas Child." Other then the songs we watched a video clipping of one of the young kids we give shoe boxes too. He was jumping for joy all around. He even kissed the shoe box. My favorite part about this circumstance was that he hasn't opened the shoebox yet! The greatest thing was seeing the founder of the wonderful Operation Christmas Child Project.

The kids had lots of fun with their substitute teacher! This week was a productive week. We had to buckle down and the kids did great! The Sentence Caricatures look amazing! They are hanging in our classroom. Come by and check them out! Next week we have lots of quizzes planned; however, they are very simple quizzes which could easily be studied in one night. This is in preparation for the upcoming Science test. We will not have a spelling or vocabulary test this Friday. Instead, students will take the vocabulary test on Tuesday, Nov. 24th.

A special Thank You to the Tomlinson Family for donating two books to our classroom from the Book Fair!

Congratulations to Alexis for earning the “Wisdom” award and to Jack for earning the “Encouragement” award! Keep up the great work!
Super Substitute ~ By: Mia Sulentic (Class Historian)
Last week Mrs. Papelian went to New York. The whole class was so sad that she was leaving. But we had fun even though she wasn’t here, because we had an awesome substitute teacher! His name is MR. Olson. The class really wanted know his first nambe, but he didn’t tell us! All week we kept asking him. Finally, he told us his name after a 25 minute period of silence! (Trust me, it wasn’t easy.) His first name was Garret, and we should have known it was something as simple as Garret. It was sad for him to go, but it also meant Mrs. Papelian was coming back!

Exciting Week ~ By: Kayla Cabaday (Class Historian)
This week was exciting. Mrs. Papelian came back! We were all excited to hear her teach again. She is so wonderful. We also turned in our Bible Posters, and they look amazing. God inspired many heroes of faith to lead us in his path. They are great examples to us and how we should lead others to faith. Moreover, todaywe went to School Family, and it was great! Mrs. Dey’s class taught us how to encourage each other.
