Completed Project is due Thursday, October 22nd.

Welcome Back

Dear Parents,

We have had an Amazing first week. We have been taking the time to build a solid foundation in the early weeks of school which we hope will pay off all year long in increased student motivation, cooperation, responsibility, and self-control. We have begun lots of team building and class camaraderie activities. Most mornings we will be having Morning Meetings. This has been a “favorite” time for the kids this week…at least that’s what they say. 

Morning Meetings are a great way to build community, set a positive tone, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic and social skills. Morning Meeting lets children know every day that school is a safe place where everyone's feelings and ideas are important. It’s a time when we discuss anything that is bothering us. It’s also a time to work on our social skills and do character building activities through devotions. Moreover, during this time we discuss the events/plans of the day (including lessons we will learn). I love Morning Meetings and believe the kids do too because it’s a time when we could share and become a “family.” My hope is this will be a time when we work out any social issues and problems, put an end to any bullying, and create an atmosphere of love and friendship. Of course, the best way to foster this type of environment is by sharing God’s Word through the Bible and through devotions.

Once in a while, we will also have a quick Closing Circle. It is a time when we wrap up and reflect on our daily events by responding to these 3 questions:
1) Favorite part of the day
2) Least Favorite part of the day
3) What we learned today
If we have learned an important concept throughout the day, this is the perfect time to review. It’s always a learning/sharing opportunity!

Classroom Economy
Beginning the third week of school, we begin a yearlong unit on Economy. Students will have an opportunity to earn classroom money. There are many different ways students earn “Pappies”: class money (credit). Their Job Applications, Letter of Recommendations, and Essays are due on September 14th. I can’t wait to see how qualified my students are!

Literature Circles: I have been reading our first novel to the class this week and we have already begun to acquaint ourselves with Literacy Circles, which we will conduct all year long. Literacy Circles are student-run reading groups. Each student has a singular role in his/her group. There is a Discussion Director, Summarizer, Literary Luminary, Word Detective, and Connector in each group. They trade off these roles each group session. Thus, everyone gets to fill each role. By the end of the year, students independently discuss chapters in the book with one another.

This week students also wrote about a day their life and about their goals, hopes, and dreams for the new school year. Next week we will discuss and practice Paragraph Writing/Construction beginning with topic sentences.
We also began reading the Writings in the Pentateuch from the Holy Bible and students each chose a “Hero of Faith” and drew a picture of him/her.

Back To School Night:
I can’t wait to talk to you about this upcoming year. Please join us on September 10th at 6:30 p.m. in our classroom (Room 231).

Thank you so much for sharing your kids with me! We are going to have a FANTASTIC year!!

See you on Thursday! (Remember there is no school on Monday: Labor Day).

Enjoy your long weekend!
Love, Mrs. Papelian
