Dear Parents,

This week was a hectic week with the non-student day and the Sacramento trip. There were lots of fun thing too! You may or may not be getting back the tests we have taken in the last week. I apologize for the delay, but I’ve been sick this week plus we have the Sacramento trip.

Don’t forget that your coffee can reports are due on Monday. Remember to finish the scroll as well as decorating your can and adding your five objects. Students should be ready to give a one minute oral presentation of their person sometime next week.

The factual report rough draft is due on Monday. Students should skip lines and fill up the front and back of their paper. Make sure to organize your ideas into paragraphs. Add an introduction and a conclusion. Make sure you also have at least one appositive. (The students should know what that means.)

Our spelling test on list 25 will be on Thursday as usual.

We will be working with our kindergarten computer buddies this Monday the 8th. We will help them use kindergarten appropriate sites that will help them with their academic skills.

You should have already gotten letters for Jump for Heart. Remember that it’s Wednesday, March 17th from 1:10-1:55 pm.

Progress reports should be coming home soon. Remember that you’ll get them for C’s or below. If your child has a 0 in something that means I never received it. They can still make those assignments up for half credit.

Keep working on the Bible verse Psalm 27:1-3, 13-14.

God bless,

Thursday, February 25th

Dear Parents,

This week your children took tests in spelling, science, and history. I have already warned the kids that it might take a week to get them back. I will be absent tomorrow and next week is an odd week. Therefore, please give me a week’s grace before asking for the grades.

This week we started our writing unit on the factual report. Your child picked a topic this week. Please help them find books or other resources on their topic. They need to have one page of notes by Monday. The notes should be phrases or bullet points that they will turn into sentences when they write the rough draft. The rough draft will be due on Monday, March 8th. The final draft will be due on Friday, March 12th.

Next week there is regular school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Next Tuesday March 2nd, there is a non-student day. Our school is hosting a fine arts festival. Our classroom will be used that day as the home base for one of the visiting schools.

Next Monday is our next math test on lessons 66-70. Please keep checking your child’s homework to make sure they are on track. Look for lessons that may come home in you child’s assignment book. If a child misses 5 or more, I will review with them and/or send it home for you to help them with.

Next Thursday is our Sacramento trip. There is a separate packet coming home for those of you going on the trip. Those of you who are not joining us, feel free to keep your child home that day. If they are coming to school, please let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly.

There will be no spelling list this coming week (March 1st-5th) because of our short week. We will test on list 25 the next week on Thursday.

Our next language test will be on Wednesday, March 3rd. There will be a review of some old concepts such as letter writing, punctuation, and capitalization. The test will also contain a part of identifying common and proper nouns. Students must also be able to correctly underline the subjects and verbs of a sentence.

Progress reports should be mailed next week. Look for them late next week or early the week after. Remember that only grades of a C or below will receive progress reports.

Keep working on your coffee can biography reports. They are due on Monday, March 8th. We will be presenting our findings to the class throughout that week.

God bless,

Wasn’t our class amazing at School Family today? They worked really hard, and they did a great job.

Thank you to those of you who have turned in various forms such as the Ducks reading log, the read-a-thon money, and your Sacramento forms. If you have not gotten a book approved for the book report or turned in your Sacramento forms, they are now overdue. I need them AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Start reading your biography now. It’s due on Monday, March 8th.

This week we started reading Number the Stars. Ask your child to tell you what country the book is set in and what has happened so far.

Keep working on our memory verse. Our focus this week was on Psalm 27:1. Next week we will focus on Psalm 27:2. Remember that in a few weeks, your child will be tested on Psalm 27:1-3, 13-14.

Next week the spelling test on list 24 will be on Thursday as usual. This coming week we will have both a science and a math test. The science test on Unit B Chapter 2 will be on Thursday, February 25th. Please help your child student for this test over the weekend. Students should be finishing up their chapter reviews which are due on Monday. We will correct them early in the week. The next history test on chapter 7 will be next Friday. I will not be here next Friday. If you have any pressing questions please ask me by Wednesday of next week or wait until the following Monday. I will be explaining Friday’s work and schedule ahead of time so students will know what to do. My goal is to send home the Friday folders on Thursday. Look for it then.

Dear Parents,

We had many fun events this week! The Read-A-Thon was a great success. The students read for approximately 200 minutes on Monday. Great job! If your child raised money for the Read-A-Thon, please bring it in on Tuesday. If you have not turned in your Ducks log, that is also overdue. I will accept them on Tuesday. Remember that it’s a part of your child’s reading grade.

The class also did a science lab on Thursday. The students were able to observe minerals and guess which ones they were based on their description. They were also able to handle many labeled rock samples. We also celebrated Valentine’s Day this week with balloons, games, and a party.

Parents going to Sacramento, I have included another medical form in your Friday folder. This one is for you to fill out about yourselves. Thank you. Please turn it on by Wednesday.

We did not end up taking the math test this week. I felt that the students needed more time to review before the actual test. Your child should have brought home their pretest on Thursday. Please help them study for the test on Tuesday. Remember that Monday, February 15th is a holiday.

If your child has not brought in their book report book to get approved, please bring it no later then next Wednesday. They need to have time to read the book, complete their scroll, and choose their five items.

Our next Bible verse is Psalm 27:1-3, 13-14. We will be learning it one section at a time over the next month. This week, concentrate on verse 1.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

Next week the spelling test, list 23, will be on Friday due to the Monday holiday.

We took our final test on Mr. Popper’s Penguins this week. I am very proud of the class average! We start our new book Number the Stars on Tuesday.

Next Friday, February 19th, is our School Family on kindness. The class has been working very hard. I hope that you are all planning to attend. If your child has lines, please practice with them over the weekend. If your child does not have lines, they have 3 songs to memorize. Please be here by 8 next Friday. I will be picking up the students from the playground at 8 am in order to practice for School Family that morning. If you arrive after 8, please take your child directly to the theater.

This week we started our next writing unit on the compare and contrast essay. So far your child should have completed an attribute chart of the two activities they picked. Over the weekend they should be working on their rough draft which is due on Wednesday. The rough draft needs to include similarities and differences of the two activities as well as a lead.

The winter Olympics start this weekend. Catch the opening ceremonies on TV this Friday at 9 pm on NBC. We are going to have an Olympic wall in our classroom. If you have a newspaper article, bring it in. If you watch an event, you can write a short summary and bring it in for our board. Let’s cheer on our country!

The next history test, on chapter 7, will be February 26th.

God bless,

Dear Parents,

Yesterday we had the chance to participate in a special assembly with some representatives from the Anaheim Ducks. They taught us about teamwork and how to put on a hockey uniform. Ask your child about it.

This Monday, February 8th, is our Read-a-Thon. Students may wear free dress and bring pillows and blankets to make themselves comfortable. We will be reading ALL day except for our music and drama classes. Make sure that your child has enough reading material for the day. I would suggest having at least two books. If your child gets tired of reading one, they can switch to the other book. I do have a fairly large library in the classroom, but having at least one book from home will ensure having something that fits your child’s reading level and interest. Remember that your Ducks reading log is also due no later than Friday of this week.

We have begun practicing our School Family program about kindness. It’s going to be good! Please mark your calendars for Friday, February 19th.

Next week’s spelling test (list 22) will be on Friday because of our Read-A-Thon. The following week’s test on list 23 will also be on Friday because of the Monday holiday. Monday, February 15th is a holiday in honor of President’s Day.

Our next math test will be next Thursday, February 11th. It will cover lessons 61-65. Please work with your child on three digit multiplication and two digit division.

We will finish reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins in Tuesday, February 9th. The final test will be on Wednesday, February 10th. Our next literature unit will be on Number the Stars. This novel is set in Denmark during the time of the Holocaust. It does have some mature themes. The book explains things in a very age-appropriate way, but there are several intense scenes with Nazis searching for Jews. We will talk a lot about what things mean as we read.

If you are going on the Sacramento trip, you should have an information packet in your Friday folder. There is a new itinerary as well as a medical form and permission slip. Please turn in the medical form and permission slip by Friday, February 19th.

We will be having our Valentine’s Day party on Friday, February 12th in the afternoon. Remember that if your child is bringing Valentine cards to pass out, they must bring one for each child in the class. Please bring the following item for our party:

****** Please bring your item on Thursday, February 11th. ******

Remember that your Scholastic book orders are due next Friday, February 12th.

Friday, January 29th

Dear Parents,

You will be getting back several tests today in your Friday folders. You will probably not be getting the spelling or math test that we took today. The science test was originally out of 75 points. However, there were several questions about mountains that I know we did not go over thoroughly enough. Therefore, the final grades are based out of 70 points.

Monday is our next Bible test on Samuel. Help your child study by asking them to tell you the stories we have learned about Samuel. Make sure they also know the Bible verse which is part of the test.

This week’s spelling test on list 21 will be back to Thursday, the usual day.

In science we are starting a new unit on rocks and minerals this week that will continue for most of February. If your child has a rock or mineral collection they can to share, please bring it in for show and tell.

We will begin practicing for our School Family this coming week. Our performance is on February 19th. We have the character trait of kindness. We will be performing a skit about David and Jonathan. If your child is not a character is the skit, they will have another special job such as flags, prayer, or helping Mrs. Barber with the awards.

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon. Look for party information in your next folder or in your assignment book. Remember that if students are going to give out Valentine’s, they must bring one for each person in the class.

This coming Tuesday, February 2nd, is a game period that your children earned by getting 45 class points. We will be playing our games from 9:15-10:00. Your child may bring board games or electronic games. The same rules apply from previous game days. Make sure all video games are rated E.

Thursday, February 4th we are privileged to have a special assembly with some representatives for the Anaheim Ducks. It will be right after lunch in place of our normal P.E. class.

Sunday, February 7th is the last day of your Reading is the Goal program. Please bring your completed reading logs on Monday, February 8th. They are due, at the latest, Friday, February 12th.

On Monday, February 8th we are joining with the other 4th and 5th grade classes for a Read-A-Thon. This will be a nice conclusion to our month of reading. It is also a mission project. The money that we raise will be going to sponsor Yesenia’s school tuition. Yesenia is a girl in Mexico that our whole school sponsors. Your child will be bringing home a pledge flyer. Please ask friends, neighbors, and relatives to sponsor your child to read. That day at school we will be reading the whole day except for our specialist class times. Students may have free dress and bring pillows and blankets to get comfortable. Please collect and return your money no later than February 16th.

In your folder you should have the winter/spring “Advance with Math and Science” catalog for Scholastic. Remember that you can order online at http://www.scholastic.com/clubsordering. You can also turn in your actual order form with your check, no cash. Turn in your orders by Friday, February 12th.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for being patient this week with all the wacky weather things going on at school. Overall your children have been really good this week even though they have had to stay inside.

Remember that there is no school on Monday, January 25th because of a teacher work day. As a result, next week’s spelling test on list 20 will be on Friday.

The language test on verbs is this Tuesday, January 26th. You can help your child study by making sure they know how to find the subject and predicate of a sentence and indentify action and helping verbs.

The next science test will be on Wednesday, January 27th. Please help your child study Unit B Chapter 1 about changes to Earth’s surface.

Thursday, January 28th will be the next history test on chapter 6.

Friday is the spelling test, as mentioned earlier, and also the next math test. This test will be based on lessons 56-60. Sorry for having several tests this week. Sometimes the units all seem to end at the same time.

Monday, February 1st is the next Bible test on our Samuel unit. Students also have a Bible verse that they will write as part of that test. This is the verse:

 1 Samuel 3:9-10
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, says, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Keep reading for your Reading is the Goal program.

God bless,

Dear Parents,

Don’t forget that this Monday, January 18th, is a holiday. Have a nice three day weekend! The next Monday, January 25th is a non-student day as well.

I will be instituting a new homework policy starting next week. If you child does not turn in an assignment on time, I will be circling that assignment(s) in their assignment book. When they turn it in, I will put my initials near the circle indicating they have gotten half credit for the late assignment. This way you will know daily which assignments your child has not turned in.

We did our science experiment on Wednesday. Did you know that peanut butter, graham crackers, jelly, chocolate chips, powdered milk, and honey can make a model of the 4 layers of the Earth? Ask your child what each ingredient represents each layer. (The honey and the powered milk are part of the peanut butter mixture.)

Thursday we had the chance to participate in a Walk Through California program. It was great! The students were all “experts” on a certain word. We also go to travel on a time machine, attend a hoe-down, have a fiesta, and much more as we reviewed information we have been learning this year about California.

You will be receiving the Bible, spelling, and math tests in this week’s Friday folder.

Make sure to keep reading for the Ducks reading log. Remember that a minimum of 15 minutes a night is part of your child’s reading grade. Plus, the more you read the more prizes you can earn from the Ducks.

Keep selling your Otis Spunkmeyer cookies. That fundraiser lasts until Friday, January 22nd.

Remember that any missing work needs to be turned in by Wednesday, January 20th. I need that work in the morning not after school. It will not be accepted after 9:00 am on that day.

Our next class School Family is on February 19. We will be working on a program about kindness. Put that date in your calendar now and plan to attend.

Next week’s spelling test will be on list 19. We are skipping 18 because it is a review lesson. The test will be on Friday, January 22nd because of the Monday holiday.

We have been learning how to write a character sketch for the past week and a half. Wednesday, January 20th will be our character sketch test. For the test students will be asked to write a character sketch about one character from Mr. Popper’s penguins. They need to include their appearance, thoughts, action, and words and well as at least one word picture.

Upcoming Tests:
Tuesday, January 26th-Unit 7 Language Test on verbs
Thursday, January 28th- Chapter 6 History Test

Dear Parents,

Happy 2010! I hope you had a fun vacation with your children and enjoyed Christmas. During the break I was able to visit 8 of the 21 California missions bringing my total to 14. Come in and take a look at some of the posters, flyers, pictures, etc. that are now hanging in our room.

There are still a few of you who are behind on your Sacramento payments. All payments should have been sent to Travel Teens before Christmas. If you are one of the ones left, I emailed you this week. Please make arrangements for completing your payment as soon as possible.

This week you should have received a flyer and a packet for the Otis Spunkmeyer cookie sales. The sale began this Monday and continues until Friday, January 22nd. Good luck!

Today (January 8th) we are beginning a reading program with the Anaheim Ducks hockey team. The Friday folder will have a folder insert that explains the program. Basically students need to pick a book from the list on the flyer and read for a minimum of 15 minutes per day. Please record the name of the book, the time, the date, and a parent signature on each day’s line. Students should feel free to read more than required. They will earn prizes from the Ducks based on their average minutes per day. See the flyer for the specific prizes. The program lasts 30 days, Friday, January 8th-Sunday, February 7th. Completing the required 15 minutes of reading a day is part of the reading grade for the 3rd quarter. Students will lose points for each day that is incomplete.

Monday, January 11th is the last day to turn in extra credit. Please make sure that you have your child complete anything they need to finish.

Tuesday, January 12th is the date of our next Bible test. We have been studying Ruth this week. It is a short unit. Please use the weekend to study for the test. Our next math test (lessons 51-55) will be on Wednesday, January 13th. Next week’s spelling test will be on Friday, January 15th instead of Thursday because of Walk Through California. Next week is lesson 17. The following week will be lesson 19 because we will skip lesson 18.

Our Walk Through California program is next Thursday, January 14th from 9:15-11:45. We will be walking over to the arboretum to take part in this exciting and educational event. Remember to study your vocabulary card and find the answer to the question on the bottom of the card. We would love for as many students as possible to dress up for this event. You may dress as any California related theme such as a Spanish rancher, a padre, a gold miner, a product of California, etc. Please be on time that day!

Friday, January 22nd is the last day of the second quarter. I need all work to be turned in by Wednesday, January 20th in order to complete grades on time. I will not accept late work after that date.

Extra Credit Opportunities 2nd Quarter 2009-2010

The most I extra credit I am allowed to give is enough to raise an overall grade in a subject by 3-5%. The following assignments can be completed to earn those points.

Bible: Students may do a timeline on the unit we just completed about Israel’s judges. Students may earn up to 10 points on their test grade. Projects must 1) include every judge that we have learned about, 2) include at least 5 facts about each judge, 3) be neat, 4) be attractive, 5) be in the correct sequence.

History: Student may earn 5 points added to their grade either in the test category or in the homework category. (Please choose one and write it on your assignment.) Students may complete the unit 2 review on p. 128-129. Students must do all of the sections except “reading on your own.” You do need to complete the unit review project as part of the review. The review must have at least 80% of the questions correct in order to count. If less than 80% is correct student will have one chance to correct it and turn it in a second time.

Language: Students can earn 10 points to add to either test grade OR 4 points added to their homework grade. Points can be earned by choosing a paragraph from a chapter book that is at least 8 sentences long and explaining the punctuation and capitalization rules. For example, if the sentence said, “Sue walked through the Acacia Park on a clear summer day.” You would write that Acacia Park is capitalized because it is a proper name and summer is not capitalized because it is a season. Things that need to be explained are capital letter, quotation marks, commas, colons, and end marks.

Math: Students may do supplement lessons found at the back of the book. Each lesson will earn 2 points added to a test grade. A student may do up to ten lessons for extra credit. The lessons will only be awarded credit if 3 or fewer answers are incorrect. If more than 3 are incorrect, students can redo the assignment to try again to meet the guideline. The lessons that may be done are (17, 18, 22, 24, 26, 29, 30, 34, 35, 40, 41, and 47.)

Reading: Students can earn up to 8 points added to their test grade. Students can earn 1 point for every 15 minutes of reading they complete. The book must be a grade level chapter book or the Bible. After the 15 minutes of reading, students must write a 5 sentence summary of what they have just read.

Science: Students may earn up to 7 points to be added to their test grade. Students may complete the following projects to earn up to 7 points per project:
1)	Complete the investigation activity on p. A 142-143. (Note you need at least 2 weeks to do this project. Some materials are required.) You must write a lab report based on the questions.
2)	Complete the investigation activity on p. A 130-131. (Note this project takes several days to observe.) You must write a lab report based on the questions.
3)	Choose a biome and do a project on the biome. You must include what types of plants and animals are in the biome as well as where your type of biome is located. You can do a report, a poster, a game, a quiz, etc. Be creative.

Spelling: Students may earn up to 30 points using the following options:
1)	Write a story with all the spelling words from one of the lists (10-15). The story must be spelling correctly, be neat, have all the words from the list used correctly, and make sense. (It can be make-believe, but it has to contain words used correctly in proper sentences.) = up to 15 points
2)	Write the spelling list 5x each (use lists 10-15)=5 points
3)	Write each word from a list (10-15) in a sentence. =5 points

Writing: Students may write a descriptive paragraph for two points added to either their essay or class work grade, whichever is lower. Students may choose the following topics: 1) an explorer that we have studied in history, 2) a mission (you may not do San Juan Capistrano or the mission you did for your report), or 3) a Bible character we have studied this year. The paragraphs must be at least 10 sentences long, contain appropriate grammar and punctuation, and contain at least 1 word picture.

All assignments are due on Monday, January 11th. No extra credit will be accepted after that date.

Friday, December 18th

Dear Parents,

We’ve made it to Christmas vacation! I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas celebrating Jesus’ birth. Happy New Year too! Next time I see you it will be 2010! Thank you for all the gifts that I received this week. You all know me pretty well judging by what you picked out. 

You should be receiving lots of tests back in this week’s Friday folder. If you child got a C- or lower, it will say “parent signature” on their test. Please sign and return those tests by Tuesday, January 5th. I am especially proud of how our class did on language test 4. Every single person passed with the lowest score being 75%. The class average was a high B. The Bible tests are graded on a curve. I realized that we did not spend the time necessary studying the order of the judges. In order to make up for that section, the test is grade out of 79 instead of the original 87. The final grade on your test should be boxed.

When we get back from vacation our first spelling list is #16. The test will be on Thursday, January 7th. We will be starting new units in almost every subject. Ask your child to share about them with you.

The second week that we come back we will be having a special event called Walk Through California. There is an invitation in your Friday folder. I have also included the lyrics to a song that your child needs to learn for this event. This is a “field trip” though we will be on campus in the arboretum. It is a fun morning filled with activities, games, etc. all about California history. You are invited to join us on Thursday, January 14th from 9:15-11:45. Please do not bring younger siblings. We encourage your child to dress up for this event. The kids can dress as any California related thing like a gold miner, product of our state (grapes, etc.), missionary, rancher, explorer, etc. Each student has been given a vocabulary card to learn. Please help them memorize the definition and find the answer to the question on the bottom. They will need to know both of those things at our event. If your child loses their card, they will lose participation points in history. No exceptions! Each child must bring the card with them the day of the event even if they already know the information. Sometimes people get nervous and need a “cheat peek” at their card. That happens to even the best students so please make sure they have the card.

In this week’s folder you will also find directions for building your mission model. They are not due for a long time, but I know people want to start early. You can use any materials to build your model. Be creative! However, if you are using food, don’t start your model until much closer to when they are due. The missions are due May 5th since Open House is May 6th. Please do not bring them earlier OR later than May 5th. Plan to help your child carry it up to the room.

Have a great vacation! I’ll see you back on Monday, January 4th.

Friday, December 11th

We’re in the final stretch of school until Christmas break! Progress reports should have been mailed out yesterday. Most people got a letter for at least one subject. If your child received an “F” in writing, it is not necessarily a cause to panic. There are two weighted categories in our scoring, essays and class work. So far, there is only one grade in the essay category. If your child did not turn it in, they got a 0. Therefore, their current grade cannot be higher than 50%. Please make sure they turn it in. The grade will be more accurate of their overall progress once there are a few more assignments added in.

You should be getting several tests home this week including math, books of the Bible, spelling, and some read and thinks. The science test that they took today will not be in this Friday folder. You should also be receiving the grading sheet for the California mission report. Most of you did an amazing job. The biggest reason people lost points was for not turning in their rough draft with the final draft. Without it, I could not see if they had made the appropriate revisions or if the final copy was drastically changed from the rough draft. Sadly, it automatically lowered the grade to a B-. The rubric shows the grade out of 15. It is weighted in the computer so that it is worth 60 point. Therefore if you take your score and multiply it by four, that is your score out of 60. I will be keeping the actual reports to display for Open House.

Next Monday is a busy day! It is our Christmas party, gift exchange, and Christmas program. Please remember to bring your breakfast item with you this coming Monday, December 14th. At our party, we will be doing several crafts, playing a game, and eating our breakfast buffet. Remember to bring a wrapped gift for the gift exchange. There is a $10 limit. Please mark if it is for a boy, a girl, or suitable for either. The all school Christmas program Monday night is mandatory. Students must find me to check in with me at 6:45 p.m. They must also stay for the entire program including the last song which the whole school will be singing.

Here is the list of test dates for the week. Please keep in mind that you will not be home much Monday night because of the Christmas program. Spend some time on the weekend studying to make sure you’re prepared.

Monday, December 14th: Descriptive writing test
Tuesday, December 15th: Language test unit 6-capitalization
Wednesday, December 16th: History test ch. 5 AND Bible test: Judges Unit 4
Thursday, December 17th: Math test lessons 46-50
Friday, December 18th: Spelling Test list 15

One study strategy to try is to have your child teach you a lesson. If someone cannot teach a concept, they do not really understand it. Have your child teach you how to add fractions, or what a Nazarite is, or about the three types of Spanish settlements in California.

Remember that Friday, December 18th is a minimum day. School gets out at 12:00 and students must be picked up NO LATER THAN 12:30.

Monday, January 4th- Come back to school after Christmas vacation

God bless,
The period will be 11:30-12:15. Students may bring board games or video games. The same rules from last time apply. All games must be E rated and have your name on them.

Our classroom Christmas party will be on Monday, December 14th from 8:30-10:00 a.m. I decided to have it on Monday to make sure those people who are leaving early will still get to participate. We will be making crafts on this day, eating a breakfast buffet, and having our gift exchange. See this week’s Friday letter for some information about the gift exchange.

I will be putting the party on the PIP website in the next few days if you would like to sign up. I am also asking each child to bring the one item.
