Week of Nov. 2
We had a great week working on projects in class and looking closer at our relationships with God. This was Spiritual Emphasis Week and parents are welcome to continue the discussions at home about where students are right now in their relationships with God, and of course way they can then strengthen it.
This week we will be starting new units in Science and S.S., continuing our 5-paragraph essay parts, and doing a end of the unit project for Bible on our Hero of Faith.
Reminders that Model of 5 Paragraph essay is due Friday 11/6 and that our in-class project- Sentence caricatures will be due on Wed. after working on them again Monday and Tuesday.
Spelling list 14 on Friday as well as a special activity in Science planned.

By Tiffany:
On Wednesday we had our Spiritual Emphasis Chapel, learning to be and stay with God in life. Mrs. Vandercook led us in worship songs: How Great is Our God and Do you know The Lord. Mrs. Polanco told us about the Operation Christmas Child where we can give gifts to needy children. We saw a short film showing happy children receiving the boxes that were filled with toys and supplies from generous people. The Middle School pastor told us the real meaning of Christmas by sharing God’s love through donations. It was enjoyable and caring.

This week we did a little bit of our History Catalogs. In our history catalogs we had to first find all our stories of the two chapters and combined it to make a souveniers. For example a winter count keychain, a Kachina doll mug, or an Ice Age snow globe etc. When we were done with that we had to write a description about it and write how much it cost.

We're onto a new quarter now so keep working hard and putting in great effort on projects! There are many more exciting projects planned this year. :)

Retro Bill by Tiffany-
Retro Bill was here on Monday teaching us to stand up for ourselves and asking for help when in trouble. Retro Bill was hilarious in acting funny while telling stories in helping us. It was not yet Halloween, but students got the chance to dress up in their best 50’s clothes. Boys wore rolled up jeans and T-shirts with their hair greased back. Girls wore pink skirts and sweaters with their hairs in ponytails. Some teachers participated in dressing up as well. We all looked cool!
Iowa testing by Amber-
This week was really busy with Iowa testing. Iowa testing is like SAT9. We have an answer sheet. We put all our answers on the work sheet not on the book. We are all tested on math, spelling, science, etc. Some tests were easy and some were difficult, but all the questions were like review.

We will continue to work on the culture catalogs and the plant projects, as well as begin a small project in language. These projects may need to be worked on at home in order to be finished by the due date. In writing we are working on the 5 paragraph essay, step by step. We have learned all the parts and are currently working on trying it out for ourselves. Students have all worked on their thesis statements and have had individual feedback. Our next step is to write the introduction which includes that thesis statement. As a creative way to learn, I have assigned the students an at-home project of making a model of the parts of the 5 paragraph essay. Students have this info. sheet along with a rubric on the back. Please remember to get started on these. They are due Friday 11/6.
Thank you!

Writing by Tiffany
This week, we learned the concept of writing a paragraph and five paragraph essay. A five-paragraph essay has similar structure to a paragraph, but it has more details making it longer. When writing a five-paragraph essay, we students must connect the body paragraphs with tranistions leading to the conclusion. Writing a paragraph is hard, but by practicing it will make you do it better.

Winter Counts- by Tiffany and Amber- class Historians
This week we did a special social studies project, each student made a spiral art that shows the significant events had happened each year in his or her lifetime. Students first wrote their list of events. Then they had to choose and draw a symbol that would represent each event. The symbols were copied onto a brown paper that resembled an animal hide. This is similar to a winter count by the Lakota Native Americans- every year they would write a very special event from that year. Some winter counts have over 200 symbols. This was the coolest project!

Week of Oct. 5
Congratulations to Angeline for this week's award for Industriousness!
The students will begin their jobs this Monday! I hope they come home excited about their positions and are enthusiastic about doing their jobs well. Our first paychecks should take place on Oct. 16th :)
Students:
For a bonus of course, please visit a bank and briefly describe our class economy to the banker. Politely ask for a "check register". If they will also give you a book of checks too, that would be awesome! The register is where you will keep track of all your money in the bank (and being taken out too). Please have these asap, but especially before our first economy time on Oct. 16th. Show them to me when you get them for your bonus $. This can be a good experience for learing about banking too.
This week:
Tuesday~ Flower drawings due
Wednesday~ Life events list due for project- one significant event representing each year you have been alive.
Thursday~ Spelling test list 10- yes one day earlier than usual so start early!
Friday~ Non-student day- enjoy. Work on book reports and prepare for language test unit 2 on Monday.
Progress reports for all students will be mailed Thursday 10/8. Progress reports for remaining quarters will be for grades of "c" and lower only.
Red Ribbon week is Oct. 19th- see flyer in Friday folders.
New policy in effect:
Students from our class went through the steps to make a change and were approved~ Students may wear relaxed dress on their birthday at school if following the policy in the handbook. Birthdays on the weekend may have this celebration dress on Monday. Students absent on their birthday for reasons other than sickness, loose the free dress opportunity. Birthday before this went into effect and summer birthdays, will have the opportunity given on a chosen day t.b.a. in May.
Reminder of one roll of toilet paper needed by Oct. 30 (not last Friday-oops)
Sign and return on Monday for $
