Week of Sept. 28

Congratulations to Alexa for the award for Obedience!

A busy week ahead- and October beginning!

Monday: Science Ch 3 test. Students have corrected study guides. Please emphasize studying the long-answer questions.
Reminder that writing worksheets from today are due- parents we are working on developing good paragraphs from a list of information or an outline. We have tried worksheet 10 again so please ask your student to share their paragraphs with you! Listen for added details and developed information compared to the list of 4 details on the top. :)

Tuesday: Math test

Wednesday: S.S. Ch 1 test- Students have a study guide for this, which we will NOT be checking in class. Please ask questions before Wed. if desired!

Friday: Ella Enchanted vocabulary test- students will have had this list for two weeks. BY Friday, please bring one roll of toilet paper (yes the tissue on it).

Remember to be reading those book report books! Book Report project is due OCT. 22- familiarize yourself with the project requirements ahead of time.

Parents, besides developing a good paragraph, we are also working on some basic math skills such as multiplying two-three digit numbers. Please work on this at home if you see that this is an area your child needs more practice. 5th graders should be able to do this with little error and in resonable time. Also, some students need to practice their penmanship, especially in certain letters. Please look at thier spelling test for some comments from me and to see their inconsistencies. Many are with the letters m ,n, b,s,r,o,a, and some capitals.
Lastly, some wise students have been getting into the habit of asking about missing work if they weren't sure. Please encourage your student to be occasionally asking if they have missing work, when they believe they are all caught up. They can do this any time! Progress reports are coming up so now is a great time to get everything taken care of.
ALL students will receive progress reports this first quarter. After that, I will only send home progress reports for a grade of "C" or lower.

You may sign THIS Friday letter for cash on Monday this time instead of printing it. I would like to remind all parents/students that reading the Friday letter online each week is very important. Please check out www.crystalcathedral.org/schools and try it! There are PIP point opportunities there as well.

We did not have anyone volunteer as our room parent. LAST CHANCE!! Please let me know by this Monday if you are willing!

Thank you all so much and keep sending me those emails for easy communication between us both. cdey@crystalcathedral.org

Week of Sept. 21

Congratulations to Catelyn for the award this week for Responsibility!

We've had another good week and I've seen some students improve good habits and effort too. 5th grade effort now!

Remember that picture day is on FRIDAY. Bring forms in early if you like!

I will be going over the 1st book report info. today so students should have those sheets to bring home and to have you sign so I know you got to see it and know it exists! Students need to have a fiction book picked and approved by me on Monday. I have Plenty of books in our classroom if needed!

The only test for this week is Language unit 1 on THURSDAY. Study guides will go out Monday. Students should be using their books to study with, especially noting things they marked wrong when correcting.

Psalm 78:1-4 due FRIDAY.

Heads up, the following week will have 3 tests: Science Ch3 on Monday; S.S. Ch 1 on Wednesday; and Ella Enchanted Vocabulary on Friday.
We'll be working hard this week to get really ready for these tests- expect to see those study guides this week and the Ella Enchanted vocab. words as well.

Special note- No one has shown any interest in being our "room parent" this year. Please let me know by Monday if you'd like to be! By this grade, that doesn't include too many tasks- a little of organizing for special events, and contacting parents for special things happening with PTT events. Mrs. Willis in the other 5th grade has offered to take on both classes if we don't have one, but we'd love to have one of our very own if possible! Thanks for considering.

Reminder that student DO have a "Friday folder" for flyers and work being sent back home graded. Please watch for these yellow folders and their contents every Friday. Remember to return Monday for $

Thank you so much dear parents

Week of Sept. 14th

Thank you parents for coming to Back to School night. I feel it is an important time for me to be able to share with you a little about the routines, procedures, and expectations we will have this year. I appreciate you spending your time listening to me!

I didn't mention last night, but I will be giving the students a yellow "friday folder" in which they should be putting all their "mailbox" contents in. This will be flyers from school as well as graded work going back to them. Please keep an eye out for these this Friday and take the papers out during the weekend. These folders should return empty on Mondays and students will be rewarded for doing this weekly.

We will be discussing more rewards, fines, and the jobs in our economy on Monday. We will go over job interviews and these will begin sometime this week during class.

Reminders for this week:
Monday~ Job applications, letter of recommendation, and essays are due. Please take time to check these over and think about how they should appear when turned in. I do want these all stapled together.
All school Chapel 8:45 in Cathedral and parents are welcome. Please wear Friday full dress uniform

Wednesday~ Bible extra credit due- students have this sheet

Friday~ Spelling test list 1 and our first math test

Reminder that by printing and signing a copy of the Friday letters, students can bring them in on Mondays and be rewarded every week!

Friday Sept. 25 is picture day.

Thank you,
Mrs. Dey

Week of Sept. 8th

Welcome to the new school year parents! And thank you very much for checking this website. Regularly checking the "friday letter" online every weekend will be a great way to familiarize yourself with important upcoming dates etc. Students will also be able to earn "Dey's Dollars" in our classroom economy by printing each entry, having a parent sign it, and returning it to school on Mondays (or of course the next day we have school if Monday is a holiday) So, YES, you can start earning them this Tuesday if you bring it students.
Speaking of classroom economy, I hope your son or daughter has mentioned our classroom economy at home and is excitedly trying to decide which classroom job they'd like to try for. The students will get a great taste of how some things really work in the 'real world' and have fun learning about economics. They are currently working on their job applications, getting 1-2 letters of recommendation, and writing their 5 paragraph essay. These things are all due on Sept. 14th. We have discussed them and begun them in class already, but finishing will be up to them at this point. I'm excited to see which job each student thinks is right for them and how they think they are qualified!

We had a great start to the year except for me getting the stomach flu! I appologize again for my absence on Friday. It is very uncharacteristic for me to miss school and I certainly wouldn't want to miss in the first week. I look forward to seeing them again on Tuesday. I trust there were no problems as I am already impressed with this class. They have been great workers with wonderful citizenship already. I am so excited for this school year.

Parents, please be sure to come to Back to School night on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Up for this week:
Monday~ No school- Enjoy Labor Day
Wednesday~ verse Proverbs 23:12 due (our school verse for the year)
Thursday~ small quiz on verb types
Friday~ Election Vocabulary test- students have been working on this list since last week. Please concentrate on knowing definition meanings.

Thank you all for your great care in parenting. I can tell what wonderful, caring parents you are through your amazing children. It is going to be a fantastic, challening 5th grade year!

Love,
Mrs. Dey
