Our BIG Dream for China

A journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step…

Why China?

• For hundreds of years, the Chinese mainland has been seen as a nearly impossible place to establish Christian ministry and outreach.

• Robert H. Schuller’s Uncle Henry was a missionary to China in the 1930s and positively ignited his nephew’s desire to establish important relationships with high-ranking Chinese diplomats and government officials there.

• We have an established presence in China today because of the translation into Chinese and publication of two of Dr. Schuller’s books by the mainstream Chinese Press: You Can Become the Person You Want to Be and Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do (a combined total of over 80,000 copies of these books has been distributed and positively received there).

• A website in China makes it possible to download the Hour of Power to 180 million Chinese Internet users – and that number is growing.

• The physical and spiritual needs there are great.

• God has opened a door for the Crystal Cathedral Ministry to play a unique role in meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the people in China.

The Hour of Power in China

After arriving in Beijing in June 2001, David and Joy Rathbun began helping Dr. Schuller arrange meetings and publish books in China and set up a Chinese website on the Chinese mainland.

In 2005, Crystal Cathedral Ministries asked David and Joy to officially establish a Beijing representative office for the California-based Dr. Robert Schuller Institute for Possibility Thinking, Inc., creating a legal entity that enables the small, one-room office in Beijing to comply with Chinese law.

David and Joy, as a husband-and-wife team, have been working on a part-time basis for the Crystal Cathedral Ministries in China. Joy is an architect and designer, and David is a television journalist and writer.

Gansu Province

Gansu is a province in the northwest of the People’s Republic of China that extends from the Mongolian border on the north to the geographic center of China on the south. It provides a vital link between the upper Huang Ho (Yellow River) area to the east and Chinese Turkstan to the west. The 2,000-year-old Silk Road, the main trading route between China and Europe, passes through Gansu, and many of the province’s cities have grown up along it.

Of China’s total 1.3 billion people, approximately 25.4 million live in Gansu Province. Han Chinese form the majority in its population, but there are also many Muslims, Tibetans, Mongolians, and other minorities – 41 ethnic groups in total.

Gansu is thought of as the birthplace of Chinese agriculture. Farming began there around 3,000 years ago. Unfortunately, it faces an adverse ecological environment – an acute shortage of water resources, sparse vegetation, and serious water and soil loss.

Gansu is considered to be one of the poorest provinces in China. Its nominal per capita annual income is around $1,120.

God’s Message, Our Mandate

“God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. An He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:19-20, NIV).

Our BIG Dream for China

Since the mid-1990s, Drs. Robert H. and Robert A. Schuller have been building “spiritual bridges” to the people of the Chinese mainland by focusing on diplomatic relations and relationship building with the Chinese government and potential China-project partners.

We will be working in cooperation with a handful of these partners inside China to co-jointly meet their spiritual needs as we meet their physical needs.

$1 million dollars has been pledged in an array of POSSIBILITY-DOING areas that have been designed to transform our ministry’s positive message of possibility thinking and HOPE…into POSSIBILITY-DOING…to bring God’s message of LIFE...in real time to the lives of people on the Chinese mainland.

As you spend a few minutes reading the project descriptions that follow for these key initiatives for China, think and pray about this: How might God be calling YOU to get involved?

If you would like to suport this effort now, as a way of thanking you for your tax-deductible gift of at least $35, we will send you a commemorative, deluxe-bound copy of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale's bestselling book, The Power of Positive Thinking.

How You Can Particpate - Just say: YES!
