Chime Master Travelling Carillon Concert At Crystal Cathedral

July 22, 2009

The Royal Eijsbouts/Chime Master Travelling Carillon will be on display at the Crystal Cathedral Welcome Center on Wednesday July 22. A semi-truck and customized trailer transported the carillon to the west coast for this performance. A concert will be given at 7:00 PM by Rick Breitenbecher. This portable carillon is considered to be the heaviest in North America, containing 48 brass bells, weighing 10,710 pounds.

"Carillons are considered to be the world’s heaviest musical instruments, and this one is no exception, weighing in at 5.5 tons," says Chime Master President Jeff Cook.

"The Carillon, as a musical instrument, became popular during the late 17th century in the Lowlands of northern Europe. The bells were market day entertainment ringing from tall towers in the town square. Today we can bring the carillon to ground level so the kinetic experience of seeing the carillonist play, hearing the bells, and feeling the vibration of the sound can blend into a dynamic musical experience."

The mobile Carillon will be placed on the plaza in front of the Welcome Center. Please bring you lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this free concert.

The Crystal Cathedral is located at the corner of Chapman Avenue and Lewis Street in Garden Grove, California, just a few blocks west of the 22 and 5 freeways.
