Everything else goes back in the box...

By Bobby Schuller

"Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.'" -Acts 3:6

John Ortberg tells this enlightening story: "When I was growing up, I used to play Monopoly with my grandma all the time and she was phenomenal at this game, and I would lose every time. She would take my every dollar, my every piece of property, everything. And she said, ‘Someday, son, you're going to learn the game.'"

The following summer, John played Monopoly with his neighborhood friends all summer long, and during that time, he figured out how the game is won. It's about getting as much money and as much property as possible.

The next time he visited his grandmother, John played Monopoly with her again, and he beat her good. He took her last dollar, and her last property, and every house, and every little red hotel. He scooped it all up and he said, "I won, Grandma. I know that this game is about total acquisition."

And she says, "You've learned the game. You have. Now here's the next lesson: It all goes back in the box."

He said, "But, I love this game. I don't want it to go back in the box."

She said, "Well, that's the lesson of Monopoly, my son. It all goes back in a box. Every dollar, every title deed, every house, every red hotel goes back in the box. The game has been played before you were here and the game will be played long after you are here, but in the end, everything goes back in the box."

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for this wonderful reminder that your treasures in heaven on earth are not what I acquire, but what I learn from you, and how I treat others because of you, and how I rest in you. Thank you, Lord, for your treasures in my life. Amen.

Reflection: What do you treasure most about your relationship with the Lord?
