In God, we must trust...

By Fred Gillett

"The fear of man brings a snare: but whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe." -Proverbs 29:25

On this significant day in the lives of those who live in America, as well as for everyone around the world, let us remember that it is only in God that we can fully place our trust.

America's founding fathers learned to trust in God, live by grace, and fight for what they believed was best for the citizens of a new nation. They wanted freedom from the tyranny of over-taxation and the right to worship God without government interference.

David, in the Psalms, urges us all to trust in the Lord through his meaningful words: "Trust in the Lord...feed on His faithfulness...Commit your way to the Lord...Trust also in Him" (Psalm 37:3, 5).

Part of trusting in the Lord involves holding God's word in an exalted place (trusting in it, honoring it, praising it). David proclaimed, "I will praise his word." This is an inherent part of living by grace, since it is "the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance" (Acts 20:32).

American history repeatedly records that this great nation was founded on Christian principles and its founding fathers wished to acknowledge that fact all over Washington D.C. -- in government buildings, in the U.S. Constitution, in other historical documents, and in thousands of speeches by elected officials. All have proclaimed trust in, and dependence on, God. Even the Supreme Court walls proclaim our faith in the Lord.

President Thomas Jefferson wrote, "The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time," and asked, "Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are of God?"

As people of God, we must trust, first and foremost, in the leadership of the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Lord God, I read your words from your heart in the scriptures. As part of my trust in you and my praise for you, I commit myself to fulfilling your word. Through your word and grace, help me to shape my life so I can be an advocate for you in saying, "In God, we trust." It is in the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Reflection: When afraid or worried, what must you give up in order to receive God's protection or make good decisions? How do you feel when you place your trust totally in the Lord?
