Positive Minute - Ken Duncan

Turning to the Sonshine

By Sheila Schuller Coleman

"But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation." – 1 Thessalonians 5:8, NLT

Video Devotional by Sheila

We've all seen flowers, trees, plants—especially sunflowers—that grow toward the sunshine. It is a fascinating phenomenon called phototropism. Phototropism is when the light stimulates auxin, a natural plant hormone that affects the growth and development of all plant parts, which in turn stimulates cell elongation. So the cells of the stems that are shaded from the sun grow longer causing the stem to bend toward the light. Phototropism (in Greek, tropism means "to turn") is a positive response to a light source such as sunshine, which God built into his creation to help the plants bloom where they are planted.

God has built within all of us a similar mechanism. Faith is turning to God when we are in the dark and seeking his Sonshine. As we seek God's light, through prayer and reading his Word (especially the Psalms), we will grow closer and closer to him. Our lives will bend. Our spirits will turn. And we will find that we are not the person we were before we started seeking the Sonshine. To our amazement, we will find that we have bloomed where we were planted providing beauty and fruit for the world around us.

Take a stroll through a garden or plant nursery and think about the "process of growth" described in today's devotional. What positive growth have you seen in your life spiritually as the result of turning to the Sonshine?

Prayer:
Creator God, thank you for today's reminder to seek the Sonlight. I know that if I do this, I will grow closer to you. I bend my life to your will and ask that you produce in me a beauty and light that the world needs to see.

The positive growth I have seen a result of turning to the Sonlight, is the bending toward Him that produces the beauty and the light that the world needs to see. The world may not always 'admit' it saw this, but then it will need to 'admit' the pride in its way too. It becomes more difficult for the world to produce beauty and light because it allows the darkness the block requirements to receiving the beauty and the light of the Sonlight. I am beautiful and light because of turning to the source of these things. My results are becoming and positive growth is what He is producing in me. What He is doing matters to me.

I own a plant nursery in South Florida and walk in the sunshine everyday. God's beauty is everywhere but especially in a garden. I think I see all the beautiful things until visitors, especially photographers show me even more beautiful things that surround me that I have missed. God let me see, realize and experience just 1/2% of all you are offering us. This planet You have created is filled with magnificence. Give us the knowledge to protect and cherish her.
